20 Sep Sun, Sand, and Surf: Your Guide to the Stunning Beaches Near Willow Creek Adventure Camp
After a day of conquering high ropes, abseiling down cliffs, or mountain biking through the bush at Willow Creek Adventure Camp, there’s no better way to unwind than by feeling the sand between your toes. You’re perfectly positioned on the Fleurieu Peninsula, a region renowned for its pristine coastline and world-class waves.
So, grab your towel, slather on some sunscreen, and let’s explore the incredible beaches waiting for you just a short drive from Willow Creek Camp. Our star destination? The beloved Middleton Beach.
The Crown Jewel: Middleton Beach (approximately 15-20 minutes’ drive)
Middleton isn’t just a beach; it’s the beach for many visitors to the South Coast. It offers the perfect blend of relaxed vibes, natural beauty, and accessible adventure.
The Vibe: Family-friendly, laid-back, and welcoming. It’s a place where learners catch their first wave next to seasoned longboarders, and families build sandcastles while fishers cast a line off the point.
The Surf: This is what Middleton is famous for. The beach boasts consistent, learner-friendly waves thanks to its protection from dominant south-westerly winds. The famous “Middleton Point” break offers a longer, more powerful right-hand wave for experienced surfers, while the inside sections are perfect for beginners. Don’t have a board? No problem! We have everything that you need in our surf shop for hire.
The Beach Itself: A long, sweeping stretch of golden sand backed by dunes and grassed areas. It’s perfect for a stroll, a game of beach cricket, or simply lying down and listening to the waves.
Why it’s perfect for Willow Creek campers: It’s the ideal spot to continue your day of activity with some surfing or to completely switch gears and just relax. The easy-going atmosphere is a great way to bond with your group after the challenges of camp.
Beyond Middleton: Other Coastal Gems
While Middleton is a standout, the surrounding coastline is dotted with other breathtaking spots, each with its own unique character.
Port Elliot (Boomer Beach / Knights Beach)
- Distance: ~10 minutes from camp.
- The Vibe: Historic and picturesque. Port Elliot is a charming town with a rich history. The beaches here (like Boomer and Knights) are smaller, cove-like, and protected, making them excellent for swimming and snorkelling on calm days.
- Don’t Miss: The walk from Middleton to Port Elliot along the coastal cliff path offers stunning views. Grab some famous fish and chips from the Port Elliot Bakery and enjoy them on the grassy cliffs overlooking Horseshoe Bay.
Goolwa Beach
- Distance: ~20 minutes from camp.
- The Vibe: Vast, wild, and epic. Goolwa Beach is a seemingly endless stretch of ocean beach that runs all the way to the Murray Mouth. It’s a hotspot for wind sports, long walks, and 4WD driving (with a permit).
- Don’t Miss: The view from the Goolwa Wharf and the chance to see the mighty Southern Ocean meet the waters of the River Murray.
Basham Beach & The Waitpinga Cliffs
- Distance: ~15 minutes from camp.
- The Vibe: Rugged, raw, and untamed. For a more dramatic coastal experience, head south of Middleton. The cliffs here are spectacular for photography and whale watching (during winter and spring months). Note: Waitpinga and neighbouring Parsons Beach are known for strong rips and are not recommended for swimming. They are, however, legendary fishing spots.
Your Beach Day Essentials & Tips
- Safety First: Always swim between the red and yellow flags. If the beach is unpatrolled, be extremely cautious. Rip currents are common on South Australian beaches. If in doubt, don’t go out!
- Check the Forecast: The weather can change quickly. Bring a warm layer even on a sunny day – that sea breeze can be brisk!
- Leave No Trace: Help keep these beaches beautiful. Take all your rubbish with you.
- Sun Protection: The Australian sun is fierce. A hat, sunscreen, and a long-sleeved rash vest for surfing are non-negotiable.
Your stay at Willow Creek Adventure Camp is just the beginning of the adventure. The breathtaking beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula are your stunning, natural playground. Whether you’re riding the waves at Middleton, exploring the rock pools at Port Elliot, or gazing at the dramatic cliffs at Basham, you’re in for an unforgettable coastal experience.
